Search Engine Optimization – SEO is what is used for both people and search engines to understand what your website is about. There are two major aspects of SEO; one is for users and the other is for search spiders. Both need to be done correctly to ensure that everyone understands what each page details.
People read the text on the web page to understand what it is about. Having complete sentences and clear thoughts will make sure that people find the information they are looking for. Pictures show additional information to visitors of your site and can be used to describe your products and services. Having a clean layout and good use of white space will make your website look professional and uncluttered.
Search engine spiders could care less about how your website looks to people. They look for a few pieces of information to understand what the website in whole is about and what is on each individual page
Meta Title Tag
The meta title tag is what is shown in the search engine results. This should start out with a keyword phrase that accurately tells what the page is about and also use your brand name. This is not something that is typically shown on a page itself, but can be written on the page as well.
Meta Description Tag
The meta description tag is a short sentence that explains more of what the specific web page is about. This is also shown in the search engine results in gray below the header. This sentence can be more descriptive, but should still contain keywords that are relevant to the page.
H1 through H6 tags are used in a website and include page topic starts as well as other important information. These header tags should be used throughout the page with the H1 as the top level and the following in order from one section to the next. Primarily H1 and H2 are mostly used and the H3-6 tags are rarer. H1 tags should again contain the primary keyword focus for that specific page.
Image Alt Text
Search engine spiders can’t exactly see what a photo is about. Image alt text explains to the spiders crawling on your site what the photo is of. This should be descriptive and contain the keyword phrase of the site. There are not character limits to the image alt text, so be as descriptive as possible.
The above is what search engine spiders look at to determine if your webpage matches the search term that the user was looking for. By using the correct formats and following this technique will ensure that when someone is looking for what you provide, you will show up in their results.
